Attention Truckers: Don’t Forget the Form 2290 Deadline!

If any of your clients are big-rig truckers, then Friday’s deadline reminder from the IRS applies directly to them. Vehicles at or above 55,000 pounds of taxable gross weight require Form 2290, Heavy Highway Vehicle Use Tax Return – which is due for most applicable taxpayers on August 31. Since the deadline for payment applies to the first month of use, most truckers whose tax year runs July 1, 2016 through June 30, 2017 will need to make a weight-based tax payment of up to $550 by the end of this month. However, those who do not first use a vehicle in July have until the last day of following month to file. The IRS stresses the ease and convenience of e-filing, especially as it relates to truckers: “Generally, if you e-file Form 2290, you can receive your IRS-stamped Schedule 1 electronically minutes after e-filing. You can print your Schedule 1 and provide it to your state Department of Motor Vehicles without visiting an IRS office.”
